Junior Front End Developer

About the job

We are looking for a dynamic and ambitious junior front-end web developer to help us grow and meet the demands of our expanding client base.

The primary focus of this role is the development of templates for our BrandStencil software product - an artwork automation tool which uses the best of web technology to generate print ready and digital artwork.

BrandStencil templates can be thought of as mini, stand-alone web apps, so the role is varied and always challenging.

You will have the opportunity to enhance your skills in many areas. Template development involves creating pixel perfect HTML and CSS, but is also an exercise in UX design as each template has a custom interface created using our extensive component library.

This is an excellent opportunity to work with some amazing organisations in the not-for-profit sector and become part of a highly skilled team.

About you

You have a passion for web development and are interested in helping people interact well with technology.

You’re a problem solver who can turn a set of requirements into an elegant solution.

You have a keen eye for design and can spot the difference between Helvetica and Arial at 100 yards. You understand document layout and can create pages which gracefully flex and flow as their content changes.

You’re not a beginner. Perhaps you’re a year into your career as a developer and are ready for your next challenge. Perhaps this will be your first role but you’ve got some non-professional experience behind you. Perhaps you’ve been doing something else for a while and are looking for a career change.

In any event you’ll have lots of support right from the start; we’re a friendly team and there’ll always be someone to ask.

Your skills

  • Problem solving - you can understand the template requirements from a brief and devise a workable solution.
  • Communication - you are able to clearly express your thoughts and ideas with the team and participate in discussions.
  • Technical delivery - you can accurately convert artwork into semantically structured HTML and CSS and use this to create dynamic templates.
  • Tools - you know your way around PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign and are comfortable exporting asset in different formats.
  • Autonomy - you can work independently and are able to manage your own time.

Knowledge and experience

Highly desirable

  • Professional experience in web development
  • Comfortable working with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign / Illustrator / PhotoShop)
  • Confident writing clean and semantic HTML and CSS
  • Understand image optimization and familiar with SVGs
  • Understand the concepts of templating (think WordPress themes)

Beneficial

  • Git Version control
  • Scss
  • Basic JavaScript
  • Basic PHP

Personal attributes

  • Own and take pride in what you do
  • Have a curious attitude and enjoy diving into a challenge - no two templates are the same
  • Meticulous attention to detail with a keen eye for design
  • Highly motivated and good at working autonomously
